About the consortium:
In July 2003 the national libraries of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, The British Library (UK), The Library of Congress (USA) and the Internet Archive (USA) acknowledged the importance of international collaboration for preserving Internet content for future generations. This group of 12 institutions chartered the IIPC to fund and participate in projects and working groups to accomplish the Consortium’s goals. The initial agreement was in effect for three years, during which time the membership was limited to the charter institutions. Since then, membership has expanded to include additional libraries, archives, museums and cultural heritage institutions involved in Web archiving. For a complete list visit our
members page.
The goals of the consortium are:
- To enable the collection, preservation and long-term access of a rich body of Internet content from around the world.
- To foster the development and use of common tools, techniques and standards for the creation of international archives.
- To be a strong international advocate for initiatives and legislation that encourage the collection, preservation and access to Internet content.
- To encourage and support libraries, archives, museums and cultural heritage institutions everywhere to address Internet content collecting and preservation

Ina (Institut National de l'Audiovisuel)

Ina is a publicly funded institute responsible for collecting, preserving and making available the French radio and television heritage, designated by law as the national repository for the legal deposit of French radio and television broadcast material. Its collections span over 70 years of radio and 60 years of television. In 2006, the legal deposit was extended to the French web and the mission for this activity was shared between two IIPC Members: the French National Library (BnF) and the French National Audiovisual Institute (Ina). The web legal deposit at Ina focuses on all French websites related to the broadcast industry and economy, for example Web sites of all French broadcasters, French Web tv and web radios, French online video publishing platforms, web sites documenting broadcasts commenting on radio and TV celebrities or media history (official or fan web sites), and more. In January 2009, Ina has started the focused archiving of audiovisual media related web sites. A core list of about 4000 web sites have been selected; it will regularly be updated and enriched. Access will be available on site at the Ina consultation centre which is hosted within the research library of the François-Mitterrand site of the BnF. The aim is to enable coherent temporal navigation within the archived web sites. Collaborative work with the users is underway to define the best query and consultation tools.
